Let’s face it; the kitchen table is much more than just a place to eat. It is the focal point of most family activities, ranging from family meals to game night. It is used for homework, figuring out the family finances, family meetings and just about anything else that might require a flat work surface.
At Kitchen-tables.us, we understand that the dining room table is often the hub of family and social activities. And because it is a centerpiece of family life, a kitchen or dining room table should be as sturdy as it is beautiful. We have designed our website as an informational resource for anyone that is in the market for a new table but isn’t sure where to start. We do not endorse any particular company or product, and the information we provide is intended to be as non-biased as possible.
A table is a table is a table. In many of today’s modern homes, there isn’t much to distinguish the kitchen from the dining room. Unlike older houses, the houses built today often incorporate the two into one large space. This being the case, the idea of kitchen and dining room tables as two separate pieces of furniture has largely been erased.
Generally speaking, “kitchen tables” usually refers to smaller, less grandiose tables. They rarely seat more than four people, are designed to occupy a small amount of space, and are often placed in a corner or nook. Traditionally these tables were most often used for eating breakfast or for socializing over a cup of coffee or tea. While these items were largely utilitarian in design, that does not mean that they can not be elegant or creative.
While the vast majority of kitchen tables are made from wood, with oak and cherry being among the more popular, this is not always necessarily the case. Wrought iron can be used to create beautiful, well crafted designs for chairs and table bases. These wrought iron creations are often topped with a thick, beveled glass top. The old-style soda fountain and roadside diner tables are also very popular designs, incorporating the “modern” look of chrome and steel with a brightly colored laminated table top.
Dining tables, on the other hand, have traditionally been of a more elaborate design. They are often much larger than a standard kitchen variety, and almost always include the capacity to expand through the use of leafs that can be used to make the table longer. In many cases, the legs and base of the table will feature intricately carved designs, and a quality table will always be impeccably finished.
Dining tables are also generally much more expensive. It is not unusual for a high quality dining room table to cost thousands of dollars or more. The quality craftsmanship and use of expensive materials such as marble and top-notch hardwoods make these tables exquisite, but pricey.
